The great dust experiment

On 12/30/2010 I did some cleaning of my bedroom... I vacuumed the entire room 3 times during the day, and (prior to the last vacuuming) I wet-dusted every surface.

So 12/31/2010 I decided to figure out why the vacuum always picks up more and more stuff no matter how much I clean. I vacuumed at 1:45pm, here is the result.

Then again with some scale:

Went 2 hours, didn't let the dog in the room, I entered and left a few times, but did not go outside except 2 steps onto the porch to empty the vacuum filter to the garbage on the porch.
- Got absolutely covered in dust trying to empty the HEPA filter out outside... had to put my hoodie in the wash b/c it looked like I just got hit with a bag of powered sugar... Seems less healthy than just living with the stuff in my carpet...
* Results: See picture. Mainly red carpet and some hair. Large amount of really fine dust at the bottom (maybe just knocked out of the filter?)

So what space was I vacuuming? This one... for 5 minutes... (takes 90 seconds if you're not doing an experiment):
4:30pm: Experiment was impacting my happiness. I wanted the dog in the room, so I waited 30 minutes instead of 2 hours. Vacuumed again for 5 minutes
* Results: See picture:
4:40pm: Decided to just turn the vacuum on and move in back and forth in one 4ft line for 5minutes:
* Results: See Picture:
Then the whole room again at 8pm:
And of course, 3pm on 1/1/2011:

So what did I learn?

I have no idea.

  1. I just told my mother about your New Year's Eve vacuuming experiment. She responded, with real concern in her voice: "He needs to find something to do."

  2. She's crushing my dreams of becoming a professional vacuumer.
